I was torn between giving The Face of Trespass three or four stars. I have long been a Ruth Rendell fan though this book did not turn into a favorite. I found the story slow to develop though the characters were clear and obvious. For the first part of the book, I actually wondered if I was reading a mystery. I kept at it, however, because of my fondness for the author's other works. I do not follow the rule that I must finish all books I start since I've long felt that if it's not interesting, good, or worth the time, I won't waste the time. A bit disappointing but still worth the read.

The face of trespass Ruth Rendell 9780385016773 Books Reviews

This is my first Ruth Rendell novel. I can see why she's popular the book is very well written, and the psychological insights are sharp. But the book is pretty unremittingly dark--I just didn't like the character that much, which made the novel something less than a pleasure to read.
excellent.
As ever, a compelling told told by someone in charge of the language and all the bits and pieces of story telling.
This is what I expect from this author - it keeps you turning page after page to get to the "crunch line". I recomend it for all readers who enjoy this genre - forensics.
Even the great Ruth Rendell can miss sometimes. There are too many details and need of editing. There are fascinating and troubled characters like all of hers are, but it's too long before the characterizations pay off in the form of story. On top pf that, typos and grammatical mistakes abound in this version. The editors should go through it and fix it.
Ok
Finally, this early Rendell masterpiece is available on ! This short novel is classic Rendell beautifully plotted, engrossing, written in Rendell's hallmark style that one can recognize among hundreds of authors. Rendell is adept at creating nueanced and complex characters her readers are not likely to forget for years to come.

In THE FACE OF TRESPASS, she takes us deep into the mind of a man obsessed with the loss of a woman he loves. Almost the entire first half of the book Graham stays in an abandoned hovel in a tiny village, speaking with no one and seeing no one. Still, every page of his story is fascinating. There is very little action here, and definitely no car chases, gory details of murders, dismembered victims, and order things today's authors love to pile up in order to attract their readers. Rendell's talent is such that she doesn't need these gimmicks to make her novels impossible to put down. She offers an unrivalled psychological insight into the personality of her main character. The seemingly benign setting of her novel conceals a dreadful sense of impending disaster.

In short, this is a great novel that can be read and re-read as many times as one wishes and still remain enjoyable.
