To Seduce a Sinner The Legend of the Four Soldiers Elizabeth Hoyt 9780446406925 Books
After reading the first book in this series, I went out and bought all other available Elizabeth Hoyt novels. It was that good. And thank goodness, after reading the second book, I found that it was no fluke! This was a continuation of the first story, and our hero and heroine appeared in that book. I wasn't sure how I would enjoy Vale's story, as he rather sounded like a nut, and was described as rather comical looking, except for his turquoise eyes. Apparently looks aren't everything, because I just loved him! The chemistry between Vale and Melisande was scorching. The elements dealing with PTSD added great depth to the story. To Seduce a Sinner The Legend of the Four Soldiers Elizabeth Hoyt 9780446406925 Books Reviews
Elizabeth Hoyt has an uncanny ability to write a steamy romance story which still has an intelligent, complex plot. This second in her Four Soldiers series is another feather in Ms. Hoyt's cap. Her first series, the Prince Series, (The Raven Prince,The Leopard Prince, and The Serpent Prince), which should be on the keeper shelf of all romance fans, first brought Ms. Hoyt's wonderful talent to the forefront. The Four Soldiers series, thus far, proves that the author is no one-trick pony.
The opening chapter of "To Seduce a Sinner" introduces a delightfully hungover hero, Lord Jasper Vale, being jilted at the altar by the ninny heiress he was marrying for convenience. Enter our heroine with a proposition Marry me instead. Jasper thinks, why not? And thereby hangs the romantic tale. Melisande Fleming, the heroine, has been in love with Jasper for years, but has never revealed her feelings. Jasper doesn't really care who he marries, as long as she is of a suitable rank and reputation, and can produce an heir. Neither character mentions love, or even sex. An entire novel could have been written just about this interestingly arranged marriage.
But Ms. Hoyt goes so much deeper into her story, just as she does with all her books. Jasper has been emotionally damaged by the same horrible massacre which darkened the hero's character in the first book in this series. He is determined to discover why and how his regiment was betrayed in a fatal ambush during the French and Indian War in the American colonies. Interweaving this subplot into the love story which begins to blossom between Jasper and Melisande is done deftly. As a reader, I really cared about these characters, and about how they could build a life together while dealing with the emotional ills which beset them.
I highly recommend all of Elizabeth Hoyt's books. She is a very talented writer. Her fans will not be disappointed in this latest installment.
This is the second book in The Legend of the Four Soldiers series.
I was not too impressed with the first book in this series as I never got attached to the abrasive heroine. Luckily, this book is of the quality that I have come to expect from Ms. Hoyt. This is the kind of tale that has made her one of my favorite authors.
Melisande has loved, from a distance, Lord Vale for years... although Vale has barely acknowledged her existence. After watching Vale get dumped by his betrothed for the second time, Melisande sees her opportunity and takes advantage of it; she proposes marriage and Vale accepts.
This book had probably one of the funniest opening chapters I have ever read. The scene between Vale and his hysterical fiancée had me laughing out loud and really set the pace for a fantastic story.
Melisande is a heroine who fades into the background when in public and has a few secrets of her own. She's not conventionally beautiful but her wit, humor and sense of herself more than make up for the physical. I thought her and Vale were a perfect match and I enjoyed their sarcastic sparring and watching them get to know each other. Their romance has a real believability to it and their honesty and acceptance of one another was refreshing.
These are too complex characters that aren't that typical to historicals. I found this an easy mix of fun, romance and heat. I also enjoyed the ongoing mystery of the possible betrayer to Vale and his fellow former soldier. I look forward to seeing how that pans out and I can't wait to read the next book. This is one of those impossible to put down books, I loved it.

I really, really enjoyed this book. While the first was a bit more ridiculous, this one was quite lovely. I thought the characters were well constructed and developed, and while Jasper is kind of an ass at first, he's also quite charming, and you can't really fault him for being how he is. I think the author does a great job writing about the different kinds of PTSD that there are, and Melisande's vulnerability and strengths play out really well.
Plus, the romance... well, that actually was a bit stiff, but I think it was developed quite well too.
The only issue I have (and that's the star that's missing) is that Melisande's secret should've caused a lot more of a reaction from Jasper than it did; I get that the context had changed between them and everything, but still... come on, given the times, he should've at least gasped or something.
Either way, I really enjoyed this book and read it in a weekend. It's better than the first.
