Gallant Waif Anne Gracie 9780373291571 Books Reviews

Unfortunately this book is out of print, but don't let that stop you from buying it used. I purchased it because of the rave reviews and the similarity it has with one of my shelf keepers -Yours Until Dawn- by Teresa Medeiros. And I'm so glad I did!

I won't rehash the plot as others have done so well, but don't mistake this for a typical Florence Nightingale story. Its not. In fact the wounded Major and his 'house keeper' don't even like each other in the beginning. There is A LOT of yelling and screaming in this book -most of it quite funny. The H/H hate each other on the outside but are secretly in love. Both are extremely insecure. Two very vulnerable characters that have to find a way past their fears.

Great story, definitely worth the effort to find a copy.

I read it in one sitting. Just a wonderful book to add to my keeper shelf.
There were moments I did laugh, but otherwise this book is completely ridiculous. If the main character is such a 'hoyden' that she completely defies the decorum of ladies of her day, than why in the heck is everyone so obsessed with her embracing her proper rank in life? The only aspect of appropriate upbringing she has is apparently her accent and her mother's family. She loses her temper bigger and faster than a modern day Italian girl - I'm saying this from experience! ; ) It was just too over the top. Scene one and she's (spoiler) throwing a tea pot, Scene 2 (spoiler) and she is somehow so petrified of spiders she ends up wrapped in his arms despite being virtual and hostile strangers - I don't expect Jane Austen realism, but just putting them in long dresses with a virginity obsessed chorus of mean ladies does not a historical romance make. The ball scene was good until it wasn't and went waaay over the top. (Spoiler) Wellington? Really? For her to reach that kind of notoriety, she would have to have attained a Florence Nightingale status and that is beyond ahistorical. On top of going over the top in the ballroom scene, it didn't end there (although I thought that was the natural climax of the book) there had to be another scene or two where they are still misunderstanding the other based on a few misplaced pronouns. I mean, get real... Adults that have been through so much just don't act like that. Lame. Am I getting too old for romantic historical fiction? Isn't there anything better out there? This just didn't do it for me. Sorry.
This was a compelling story line for a regency fluff novel. Too hurt and broken people come together and enjoy a good fight. Two very stubborn characters who refused to just talk it out, but it made for some great tension and fights. Kind of silly but fun to read. This walked a line between pg 13 and R but there is no sex scene, just some serious kisses and some make out sessions that go a little too far for a regency read.
I have absolutely adored Anne Gracie's prior book, "Tallie's Knight," so I was disappointed with this "Gallant Waif." It's a good book, decent story. The fiancé, Julia, who jilts our poor hero, Jack, was two-dimensional. She has a slight part in the beginning chapter and fades away to nothing. I would have scraped that scene and discussed its impact rather than provide us with such a cardboard character who does nothing to push the story line forward and never appears again. Jack treats Kate as his housekeeper (which is appropriate), but then flip-flops when his friends come to visit and wishes to treat her as honored guest, instead (which is inappropriate). He can't have it both ways. There's a rather overly-dramatic abduction/rescue/obligatory overnight stay that, frankly, should have also been omitted, but this book is a fine way to while away an afternoon and so long as you don't overthink it too much, it's okay.
