Miss Serena's SecretRegency Brides: A Promise of Hope #2
By Carolyn Miller
Serena Winthrop's passion has always been her art until she associates it with a most devastating incident. And worse if her secret were ever become known her reputation would be ruined, not that her late father's misdeeds hadn't already cast a cloud upon the family name. With the care of her sister Catherine and brother-in-law Jonathan Carlew (from Winning Miss Winthrop) Serena at least has a safe place to hopefully heal.
Viscount Henry Carmichael is everything Serena dispises - charming and flirtatious, a gambler, and to all appearances lazy. But Henry has discovered a dissatisfaction with life especially when comparing it to that of his friends. Spending time with Jonathan at his family estate means that he'll be spending time with Serena Winthrop - whom seemingly regards him with disdain. But when Jonathan extracts a promise from him to tread carefully around Serena and to not pursue her Henry soon finds the promise is not as easy to keep as he believed it would be.
But when poor choices of his past come back to thwart his plans and hopes for the future Henry must decide where to place his trust. Will he place it in his own charm and skills or will he turn to Someone more eternal and faithful?
Those who have read Carolyn Miller's previous Regency Brides book will enjoy this newest book which allows us glimpses of some of the previous characters and how their lives have progressed. This is the second book in the second series but it can easily be a stand-alone if you have not yet read the previous 4 books.

Miss Serena Secret Regency Brides A Promise of Hope Book 2 edition by Carolyn Miller Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
This was a sweet and, at times heart-breaking, Regency tale of a young artist and the outwardly light-hearted nobleman who is.drawn to her. The characters were imminently likable, even Serena's cool exterior wasn't off-putting, which was a testimony to the skill of the author. How Serena was with her art was very realistic as well. At times it did seem that there was some repetition in the character's thoughts, though, which slowed things down a bit. I thought the Spiritual aspect of the book was very well done, woven authentically into the story. Altogether, this was an enjoyable Recency romance by a very talented author.
Carolyn Miller is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors and this book is a good example why. I find her character development to be complex and authentic; her scenic descriptions make me feel as if I am there, and she does an excellent job writing clean, faith-based romances. In this book, I especially loved the themes of forgiveness and that your past mistakes don’t define who you are in Christ. I definitely recommend this book and this author!
I liked this one better than her last one, but oddly, I actually JUST read it about three weeks ago and can't remember much of the story. Sorry. I rated it four to be fair mostly because this author has proven she can turn out multiple decent stories. Her writing style is just shy of being excellent. As I write this, I am recalling more, I vaguely recall that the heroine' s "bad" experience seemed a bit overdone (other reviewers commented same). I won't add a spoiler, some other reviewers were a bit more forthcoming. I just wasn't convinced what she experienced could produce that much angst unless the person was mentally unbalanced, which she was not. But the hero was great.
So far, while I have enjoyed the first one of her novels the very best (miss Ellison), All are well-written and anticipated the release of each one.
These novels should DEFINITELY be read in order. While the first three are somewhat independent from the second series, characters reappear and I highly doubt it would be easy to really enjoy the character interactions without at least reading the first one (miss Ellison' s story) and the one right before this (Serena' s sister's story.
I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Serena’s Secret of Carolyn Miller’s Regency Brides A Promise of Hope Series.
Finding Carolyn Miller’s books late last year has been a welcome addition to my list of favorited authors.
Ms. Serena is a young woman of diminutive size with an artistic gift incomparable to many of the male artist of the day. Due to the era in which she lives, and her diminutive size, no one takes her or her artistry seriously.
Lord Carmichael is a bit of a flirt and gadabout who does not seem to take much seriously, including Serena and his father’s estate.
With her mother, Serena spends several weeks at Lord Carmichael’s family estate. There she falls in love with the beauty of the countryside of the estate, and despite herself, with the Lord Carmichael.
Henry finds himself much attracted to the young woman who seems to shrink away from his touch whenever he is near. Is it just him specifically or men in general from whom Serena remains aloof?
Returning from the estate, Serena finds herself dealing with a broken heart. Under the tutelage of a new art teacher, Serena paints through her emotions. Only one other has seen the painting besides Serena, her art teacher. When he determines that the painting is stunningly exquisite and that it must be entered in the upcoming art show, Serena agrees with much trepidation only if her given name is not used.
The day of the art show arrives and hordes are gathered around the area where Serena’s painting has been hung, center row of all things! For a new artist, whoever heard it? Everyone is in awe and quite stunned.
Yet, no one is more stunned than Lord Carmichael himself.
I enjoyed this novel. The author clearly put a great deal of research into most of the details. (I will point out an error found in this book that is common in this genre...children of the era had nurses and/or governesses, the title of nanny did not come into use until later.) Overall, it is an engaging story with clean content. There are clear religious themes woven throughout. By the end I did feel a little obstacle-fatigue as it seemed that there had been so many compounding trials thrown at the hero and heroine. I would have been happy to have had a few less.
