There were some parts in this book where I forgot I was reading a thriller, if that tells you anything about this book. Stephanie Perkins is good at writing YA contemporary with cute romances but as any sort of horror, this book was a bit lacking. There's Someone Inside Your House takes place in a small town where teenagers are being murdered with seemingly no connection between them. As the days go on, the murders get worse and more frequent, as more dark secrets are revealed.
It's just... okay. There was a lot of problems like the killer being revealed, far too early. When I read YA thrillers, I want the killer to be saved for last, to keep the mystery going. I want to try to guess who it is before the characters do. I need the suspense! To have their identity exposed so soon was confusing, and it was someone who I didn't even remember meeting in the story before. There just wasn't any suspense. Even in classic horror movie moments, it was more about the romance between the main character and the emo boy than about the actual serial killer.
The romance! It was basically the whole story, to the point where I really just wished the author had written another YA romance instead of even trying to write a horror novel. It just didn't work. There was a lot of chances for this book to be creepy but it was too busy with all the kisses and friendship drama and the fact that I knew the MC would be fine. Otherwise I didn't mind the romance, I just wished it wasn't such a big part.
There was also a LOT of talk about how the MC has a dark secret in her past that haunts her and I just didn't care? Then it was revealed what her big secret was about and it wasn't really that shocking or relevant.
This book was such a classic slasher at times, it kind of got ridiculous how completely incompetent the police and everyone was. Oh you know who the killer is and where they'll probably be? Don't worry they'll just be over there easily killing six people with little to no struggle. Don't worry, we have four teenagers after them who DIDN'T EVEN THINK TO PACK ONE SINGLE WEAPON BEFORE GOING AFTER A GOD DAMN SERIAL KILLER. Ahem. Plus the killer was dropping random people like flies, it was too easy.
Some parts were a bit creepy though and I will give this book that credit. Someone creeping around inside your house, no thanks!

*Original review on Goodreads and My Blog*
I know a good bit of people didn't like this book but I freaking loved it and that's all that matters =D
I loved Makani and Ollie! I thought they were awesome together. And well, they got me a little hot and bothered at times. It was fanfreakingtastic!
So this is a teen slasher type book. I'm not sure where anyone ever got off calling it a horror book. It's a mystery, suspense, young adult book. But, I digress.
We have some nutter going around killing classmates. And I thought I might know who the killer was but I was wrong again. I never would have gotten this one.
So, Makani moved to town from Hawaaii < -- did I spell that right? And she lives with her grandma, she takes care of her and watches out for her spells. Makani had some stuff happen to her over on the island so her parents sent her away. Let me take a moment to say what jerks her parents were.
Ollie lives with his brother Chris, who is a cop, because their parents died years ago. Ollie also works at the little grocery store.
I loved these two together, I can't say it enough. I also loved Makani's friends. But the main story is of Makani and Ollie. There is plenty of time for romance in between killings. Am i right? yes...
I enjoyed the story very much. I liked how it wasn't cheesy. I loved how it was played out. I just loved it okay? If you didn't love it then that's alright because we are not all clones! And I don't feel like writing a long review so here you have it! Peace & Love!
Happy Reading!

With its combination of horror and teen angst, plus the obligatory sex scene, there was a definitely a "Scream" atmosphere to this story.
Makani Young is still attempting to adjust to life in rural Nebraska. After she was involved in an unfortunate incident in her Hawaiian hometown, along with having an estranged relationship with her parents, she has been shipped to live with her maternal grandmother in a small Nebraska town
She has been there about a year and though she hates the town, she has built some meaningful friendships and has even sparked a romance with one of the school outcasts. However, soon, she finds herself in the middle of a real-life horror film as her classmates are being murdered one by one. After she finds herself to be a target, life soon becomes about survival, and protecting the people she loves.
This book was about 80% contemporary and 20% thriller and it was often hard to reconcile the two. The vast amount of teen romance offset and lightened what could have been a more intense and intriguing story.
Many of the crimes were entirely cliche A boy dies in the school showers after having all of his clothing stolen? Or a boy who had his headphones on too loudly and didn't hear the intruder before being killed? Not to mention there was a distinct lack of tension between each murder scene, which took away from the thrill of the book. Plus, we find out who the murderer is about half-way through the story.
Though I enjoyed it overall, and the ending was satisfying, this book ultimately fell short. I felt that Perkins could have done a lot more with the story and it will definitely not be among the top thrillers I read this year
